What's a crypto bridge actually good for in 2026?

You got burned. Maybe a wrapped asset depegged, maybe a bridge got hacked, maybe you waited three days for a withdrawal that never felt safe. The promise of a crypto bridge is simple: move value from one chain to another without selling. The catch is that the same mechanism that makes the move fast also makes it fragile. This post covers the three situations where bridging is genuinely the right call, and the one habit that keeps the rest of it survivable.

1. Moving stablecoins to where the yield actually lives

USDC sits on six chains, but the 8% opportunity is on the one you don't hold. Bridging $5,000 of stablecoin from a cheap L2 to a mainnet money market takes about 12 minutes on a well-designed bridge and roughly $0.40 in gas. The arithmetic breaks if the bridge takes longer than the yield window, so check the route's recent settlement time before you commit. If it's over 30 minutes, the trade has probably already moved.

2. Repositioning into a new L1's native assets

When a new chain launches a real ecosystem (real users, not a points program), the only way in early is to bridge the gas token from a chain you already hold. This is where bridges earn their keep: the moment a DEX has liquidity and an airdrop is being mapped, bridging in beats CEXing out and back. Risk concentrates in the bridge contract, not the destination, so use a route with a published audit and a multisig that isn't three EoAs.

3. Unwinding positions without taxable sales

Some jurisdictions treat a token-to-ETH swap as a disposal. Bridging the same token to a chain where you can spend it directly avoids the sale event entirely. This is the most boring use case and the one most likely to save you a real number at tax time. Keep a record of the bridge tx hash; your accountant will want it.

The one habit

Never bridge more than you'd be comfortable losing to a single contract bug. Bridges custody your assets in flight; that is the whole job description. If the route is brand new, the token is exotic, or the total value locked is under $50M, walk away and find another path. The link below is a starting point for comparing routes on the specifics, not a recommendation.

If you need a current comparison of crypto bridge options and their settlement times, this is where I started.
